How do you find the right relationships?

Or, how do you know when you’ve found the right relationship?
From time to time I have found myself looking for something and someone would ask me, “what are you looking for?” And many times I would answer, “I don’t know, but I will know it when I see it.”
Have you ever had that experience?
Do you sometimes find yourself searching for some unknown thing, all the while knowing that when you confront it, it will make itself known to you?
Or do you more often have the experience of searching for some specific thing and then being left with one of two options:
- You find specifically what you are looking for, or
- The specific thing you are looking for never materializes?
These are two different kinds of search criteria and personalities. If you consistently look for a specific thing, there are really only two outcomes, either you find it or you don’t. If you consistently look for generalities, leaving yourself open to all possibilities, the universe presents it to you in unimagined ways.
I often find the unimagined presents are far greater than the imagined ones, because the infinite creative powers of the universe are superior to the more limited powers of the brain. So I tend to go with the flow of the universe, and, not only is it rewarding but it is liberating as well.
There is a lot less frustration and disappointment when you relax and let the universe create. But there are some caveats with that approach, firstly, you have to be open to receive without expectations or attachments to a particular outcome. That seems to be a far greater challenge for some than for others.
You have to be willing to accept the premise that you are not in complete control of anything.
So, which personality describes you better?
- Control obsessed, always looking for specific things? or
- Free spirit, willing to go with the flow?
I am reminded of a favorite Bruce Lee quote that says “be like water” …

Be like water making its way through cracks.
Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way round or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water my friend.
